Maps are enclosed.
While driving on site at the mine once past the main office parking lot,
uphill traffic drives on the cliff side. Icy conditions may exist during the
whole drive from Carbondale to the mine. During the summer, on the county
road up to the mine, practice special care at cattle guards where gates are
across half the road. Give haul trucks the right-of-way. Be alert. If
unfamiliar with the road pull over at a safe point and let haul trucks.la.j
The mine site is in a heavy snowfall area and experiences heavy spring
runoff. All sediment control structures should have special attention paid at
this time. Freeze/thaw conditions make create blocked structures during the
spring.
Within the inspection package is a set of four maps which give the basic
layout of the mine and preparation plant area. Maps covering the specific
drainage system of each mine are also included.
Access to No. 4 and No. 5 Mines is only possible during the summer months.
With the present inactive status of No. 3 Mine, access is also limited during
the winter months.
The mine has two active refuse/rock disposal areas. One is for the rock
tunnel waste and the other for refuse from the coal processing. Snow removal
is required at both this sites prior to placement of the refuse or rock
material .
The old refuse area located adjacent to the office building is undergoing
reclamation. Approximately five acres per year are topsoiled and seeded.
Seedlings are also planted at this site. Many native high elevation species
have been incorporated in the seed mix. Access to this pile is only possible
once the deep snow has melted. This area should be checked for proper
drainage through the sediment pond system.
During spring snowmelt the effluent of ponds with NPDES permits should be
sampled for settleable solids. An Imhoff cone and gallon jug should be taken
to the field on spring inspections. A copy of the NPDES pond numbering system
is in the inspection packet.
