M-77-3 /8 , TR-14, TR-1'6
Terry Tunnel Bulkhead
l-Anstruction Certification Report
Dear Mr . Sorenson:
This letter report is to provide certification that construction of
the Terry Tunnel Bulkhead meets or exceeds design criteria.
Certification is required in the April 15, 1993 DMG adequacy
concern letter (Item 4) and was committed to by SGC.
The construction stages requiring certification are listed below.
4a) Bulkhead location preparation (scaling and washing) .
The bulkhead site was scaled clean of loose material and sand
blasted to remove any surface coating that may have been
present. It was then washed down and vacuumed clean of water ,
sand and rock residue. This stage of site preparation was
adequate to maximize the potential for bonding between the
rock and concrete bulkhead.
This stage of site preparation was also inspected by John F.
Abel , Jr . , P.E . (see attached letter report) before pouring
and by DMG during a pre-pour inspection on 8/31/94.
4b) Laying of by-pass or diversion pipe.
A by-pass or diversion pipe was not included in the original
design of the Terry Tunnel bulkhead . TR No . 16 was submitted
and approved to include a diversion pipe . This pipe was to be
a 6 inch diameter Schedule 80, Grade 316L stainless steel
pipe. A thrust/seep collar , Grade 316L stainless steel , 3/8
inch thick and 10 5/8 inches diameter was to be placed a
minimum of 5. 5 feet from the downstream face to transfer
loading to the rib and prevent seepage along the pipe-concrete
contact.
