We request on behalf of' the Crystztl Valley
Environmental Protection Association (CVEPA) and the Citizens
Coal Council that OSM conduct an immediate inspection without
.prior notice of ' the Coal Basin mine located tin Pitkin County near
Redstone. 'Colorado. Mid Continent Resources held the mine
permit . which Colorado revoked, but Pitkin Iron is now managing
reclamation at the mine site.
Our members live in the Crystal River valley and are
directly affected by mining law violations at Coal Basin. We
request this action because of the conditions described below
which we believe are violations that cause imminent danger to
public safety and imminent harm of significant environmental
damage.
On June 30, CVEPA President Bi.l.l. Jociems, Mike Mechau ,
several CVEPA members , and Carolyn Johnson toured the mine site
in the company of Anthony Waldron, State Inspector . We discussed
sealing underground entries with him , which he said would be done
"sometime this summer ." We raised issues Nos. 2 and 3 with him;
he did not take any immediate enforcement action on them. On No .
2 , he said he had issued a Notice of Violation (NOV) on an
inspection some weeks ago , but he was unable to remember the
exact: abatement deadline; he said the deadline had not expired
and the operator would repair the flume "when the water goes
down . " On No . 3, he said the State had issued an NOV on the
ditch and refuse pile . We believe these three serious situations
require immediate abatement.
1 . Openings.
