I was hopeful that some emergence
would occur before writing the plantings off as failures, but I'm afraid I will need to swallow some pride
and admit to four failed planting methods and dates with this project. I also feel I led you to believe we
could grow the material and harvest seed this year. I am extremely disappointed with our lack of success.
If our germination trials and those of the Colorado Seed Lab had been low, I would not have felt so badly
about our poor success. In fact,we would likely not have pursued the project if germination was below 20
percent.
That was not the case, however. For whatever reason,we have not seen a single seedling from any of the
plantings. The staff, and especially myself, are completely stumped as to why we have failed to produce
any semblance of a planting effort with visible, young seedlings.
As we have discussed on the phone, the UCEPC can provide to you 1,000 2.5 month old Calamagrostis
seedling transplants at no cost to help compensate for our lack of field establishment success. I have also
looked into the possibility of acquiring a planting crew for you if you are still interested in the transplants.
I know you were going to investigate potential dollars for a planting crew as well. Another option that I
will throw your way Steve, is that the UCEPC could provide to you seed of our mountain brome which is
nearing release. If we estimated 100 pounds per acre of the Calamagrostis on a 0.2 acre planting, we
could provide 20 pounds of seed at no cost to you. This would allow you to broadcast the seed when and
where you wanted at a much reduced cost compared to the expense of a planting crew.
The mountain brome is an excellent material for stabilizing slopes. Like many bromes, it is an
aggressive sprouter and establishes quite readily. It is also a material which is viewed as a short to mid-
lived material which re-establishes itself from its own seed.
In any case,if one of these options or a combination of these options looks to be the preferred route,
please let us know when you can. In addition, it is quite likely that I will continue to work with the seed
you sent over in some type of field plots to satisfy my personal stubbornness if that is agreeable with you.
Otherwise,we will send all of your seed back to you.
Respectfully, n n )
X v
Steve Parr
Manager,UCEPC
