RESULTS
The stand improved in vigor during the growing season, but did not increase above a
percent stand of 50. Weeding and irrigation were continued for crop development, but as
expected, no seed was harvested in 1999. However, seed harvest is expected in 2000.
Because we did not harvest any seed in 1999,we did provide Calamagrostis plugs to the
Division of Minerals and Geology. Plugs were started in our greenhouse, grown most of
the summer and moved to the lath floor for hardening off prior to being picked up by Steve
Renner on September 7, 1999 (Delivery Record included).
CONCLUSIONS
Efforts to establish a collection of Calamagrostis purpurascens for seed increase have been
marginally successful. However, after one and a half years of trying, it appears there may
be adequate plants established to harvest some seed during 2000. Containerized plug
production did not present any abnormal or difficult circumstances, and success was quite
high in reaching the targeted 1000 plugs.
Large scale seed increase of Calamagrostis remains an experimental endeavor. If
establishment difficulties can be overcome, its potential use as a high elevation reclamation
material may be improved.
