additional trees and shrubs. Monitoring of Coal and Dutch Creeks by obtaining water
quality samples will occur three times yearly for three years in order to measure total
recoverable iron concentrations.
Products: Cover estimates will be derived from the field data produced at each Outslope
and barrier location. Outslope cover estimates of less than fifteen percent in year 2 and
twenty five percent in year 3 would trigger maintenance seeding activities. Counts of live
stems will be made at transect locations established at the vegetative sediment barriers.
A count of less than seventy five percent live stems per transect would trigger re-planting
activities. Water quality analyses will help quantify Project success at reducing total
recoverable iron concentrations in the stream systems.
Cost: $ 10,000
Objective 4: Dissemination of information pertinent to the containment of sediment at its
source in steep alpine environments, and of the resultant reduction of iron in receiving
streams.
Task 4: Collect information and documentation obtained during the construction
process. Collate and reduce all field data. Sediment generation models will be run to
calculate vegetative success in reducing sediment production.
Products: An interim report documenting Project completion specifications and
preliminary data will be published in year 2. A report documenting second year data and
preliminary conclusions will be published in year 3. Results of field data, computer
generated models and other pertinent information will be presented in the reports.
Should the opportunity arise, the reports will be presented in appropriate forums in order
to better disseminate the information.
Cost: $4,000
Objective 5: Issue a final report which documents measurable Project Products.
Task 5: All data collected from the Outslopes during the two year monitoring and
maintenance period will be collated and utilized in the computer generated models.
Water quality data will be collated and analyzed for trends.
Product: A final report will summarize the construction process, present the collated
data and the results of computer models, including an estimate of the degree of
sediment production from the Outslopes following vegetative establishment. An
estimate of iron reduction in Coal Creek will be presented. An analysis of construction
methods employed, sampling techniques and recommendations for future Project
modifications will be included. Should the opportunity arise, the report will be presented
at appropriate conferences in order to better disseminate the information.
Cost: $ 0
3.3 See attached Milestone Table.
3.4 No permits are required to complete the proposed Project. The Project Area was
once contained within an area covered by a mining permit and a Forest Service Special
