MID-CONTINENT RESOURCES, INC.
PRODUCERS OF THE FAMOUS COAL BASIN COKING COAL
BOX 158
CARBONDALE, COLORADO 81623
MID-CONTINENT RESOURCES,INC TELEPHONE
245 PLAINFIELD ROAD-SUITE 220 1303)963-2581
WILLOWBROOK,ILLINOIS 60521 TWX
910 929 6897
TLX
December 21, 1983 45-0724
Mr. Jim Herron _ _ --
Mined Land Reclamation Division
423 Centennial Bldg.
1313 Sherman St.
Denver, Colorado 80203
Re: Coal Basin Permit C-017-81 Condition No. 7
Preparation Plant Backfilling and Grading Plan
Dear Jim,
Enclosed are the cross-sections and maps denoting the present and post-
mining contours (including the proposed tunnel to wash plant conveyor coal
storage yard) .
As you can see by the cross-sections, we are requesting a variance from
A.O.C. due to steep slopes and a permanent fill. We believe this request to
be the best environmental practice for this area. The configuration of the
bench 5% to 10% surface slope and the high wall 2 to 1 will conform to topo-
graphy of the adjoining canyon. This property is privately owned and will
remain industrial and/or recreational.
Following is a detailed backfilling and grading plan:
At the time the mine is abandoned, all coal-related structures will be
removed: i.e. , the preparation plant, conveyor belts, bins. At that time it
will be decided which, if any of the buildings will remain. Possibilities are:
engineering, bathhouse, Savage shop and SWF maintenance shop. The power station
and power lines will remain. At this time all coal-related concrete foundations
will be broken up and pushed against the high wall (see cross-section) . The
various pads and benches will be graded, covering the broken concrete and
removing any outside berms and the outside edges will be rounded off, leaving
no depressions. Ten to fourteen inches of topsoil and/or soil amendments will
be added and any fertilizer, if required by soil sample.
The seed will be broadcast at 30 pounds per acre, using the 80001 mix
(see mine plan) . One and one-half to two tons of straw mulch will be broadcast
over the area.
We believe this method will create the least environmental harm to the
area.
