May 31, 2012 C- 1981- 008/New Horizon Mine SB 1
Impoundments 4.05.6, 4.05.9; Stream Buffer Zones 4.05.18:
Pond 13 was inspected. Mine water is pumped from the pit into this pond and it was discharging at the
time of the inspection.
Pond 7 was also inspected and it was discharging. This pond receives irrigation backflow from the CC ditch.
Earlier this season, the discharge had slightly elevated pH levels.
REVEGETATION — Rule 4.15 Vegetative Cover; Timing:
During this inspection we visited the reference areas for the mine. The dryland pasture reference area is
located adjacent to the Nucla airport. The dominant vegetation is rye grass, snakeweed, sage and globemallow. A
large patch of knapweed was also observed; this patch will need to be treated. The irrigated pasture reference area
is located adjacent to the WFC mine office. Ten shares of CC ditch water are dedicated to flood irrigating this
pasture. Irrigation is conducted be a contractor. This year the Staats have been contracted to manage the irrigation
and farming. WFC plans to hay the irrigated pasture reference area following the vegetation sampling scheduled
for mid -June.
The sideroll irrigators were observed irrigating in the reclaimed irrigated pasture reclaimed areas east of BB Road.
We walked across the dryland pasture on the Staats property (formerly Benson South). The grasses are unusually
dry for this time of year. There was evidence of grazing, apparently by elk since a number of elk droppings were
observed. No evidence of cattle was observed.
TOPSOIL — Rule 4.06 Removal 4.06.2; Substitute Materials 4.06.4(4); Storage and Protection 4.06.3;
Redistribution 4.06.4:
All topsoil has been removed from the Morgan property and stockpiled in either the A or B lift stockpiles
on their property.
DOCUMENTS RECEIVED None
OTHER (SPECIFY)
Number of Partial Inspection this Fiscal Year: 12
Number of Complete Inspections this Fiscal Year: 4
Page 3 of 5
