Trench 2 test results indicate a gradation
distribution of u7. 4 percent g_ra el, 35. 6 rerce--it sand, and 17.0 perc--nt
nonplastic silt. Because of the SimilariLv in gradation diStriDufLion
characteristics, the two large bulk samples were combined to form one
composite sample for engineering properties testing. A detailed discussion
of the laboratory testing procedures is presented in Appendix 1.
Two types of compaction tests were performed on the coal refuse material--
a series of relative density tests which incorporated different maximum
particle sizes, and an impact compaction test performed in accordance
with ASTM Test Designation D1557-70, modified to yield 20,000 ft-lb/ft3
compactive energy. These test results are summarized below.
COMPACTION CHARACTERISTICS--COAL REFUSE MATERIAL
Maximum Optimum Minimum Maximum
Particle Size Water Content Dry Density Dry Density
Test Method (inches) M (pcf) (pcf)
Vibratory
a(ASTM D-2049) 6 --- 75.5 88.1
3b --- 74.0 89.6
1-1/2c --- 71. 8 93. 4
Compaction
(ASTM D-1557) 1-1/2 c 8.0 ---- 91.5
Material test "as received."
b
Gradation corrected between 1-1/2-inch and 3-inch sizes to match "as
received" gradation on the 1-1/2-inch size.
cGradation corrected between 3/4-inch and 1-1/2-inch sizes to match "as
received" gradation on the 3/4-inch size.
W.A 111ANIER
& ASUACE
