The thickener has sufficient capacity to allow
for storage of solids during idle periods, such
as weekends.
Inclined Plate Clarifier
The inclined plate clarifier uses flocculation
and mechanical means to remove further solids.
The flow of water is flocculated and passed
over inclined plates, which separate the
particles from the water. The clarifier has
been sized to treat sediment loads ranging from
0 to 1, 200 ppm.
Design parameters are as follows:
Design mWimm
Influent flow rate, gpm 600 1,000
Clarifier overflow rate, gpm/ft2 0.125 0.21
Flocculator detention time, min. 8.5 5.1
Effective surface area, ft2 4200 4800
Weir overflow rate, gpm/ft 16 25.6
Flocculant dosage, ppm 2-4 2-4
At a flow of 600 gpm, engineering design is for
water clarity of 35 ppm. on leaving the
clarifier.
Surge Tank & Pumper
Clarifier overflow reports to a surge tank,
from which it is pumped to mixed media filters.
Until this point, the system relies entirely
on gravity flow. The mine water flows by
gravity to the plant and advances in the
overflow from the coarse classifier to the
thickener and/or the clarifier, overflows the
clarifier to the surge tank.
The water is pumped from the surge tank into
the mixed media filters as a means to create
pressure, forcing the water flow through the
filters, then out to the pipe leading to
outfall 028.
The surge tank is equipped with an overflow
line. In the event of a power failure, during
which the pumps would not operate, water from
the surge tank would overflow to the line,
which in turn leads to the collector ditch
3
