immmounEwnioi
MEMO
To: George Ware, Reastone Corp.
From. Tom Colbert
Date. january 10, ; 985
Re: rYOoay ,^.lant me^Sit'` Sams:'nn f0• 4no r r,S , ,-,S We
exp 1 orat i on riaa
? Ti,e veaetatic^ community comcrisir.q the roar cor dor : ,;,c mappel
anc sam led in the orlainai vegetation oaseline inventory done several
years aqo by WRD. The area encompassing the road corridor was maooem as
part of this inventory as the soruce/fir parHana vegetation type. Tne
road corridor area was not sampled, n,owever. But a considerable area of
this vegetation type was sampled in the original inventory and a reference
area was established. Therefore, information contained in the Coal Bann
Mane permit application already includes quite a bit of information about
this vegetation type. Sample aaeauacy was achieved for tnis vegetation,
type in the original vegetation inventory.
This situation is exactly the same as the situation with the asper
vegetation type at the Sutey property. in that case, the Division deemed
it not to be necessary to re-sample this type completely There should be
no reason to do it for the proposed roam either. (See Map l i l-i^-2 of the
permit application.)
2 According to policy of the Division, woocy olant density 3amplinq !_
not remained for communities where woody pianr cover is less tr un ' S
percent. The measured cover for wooay species for the gas well
exploration road is only 7.4 percent. Altnougn tree canopy cover was
not measured, it is iikely that comoined woody plant overstory ana
understory cover is less than 15 percent for the gas well exploration
road area by itself (the spruce/fir oarklano type considered over the
entire inventoried area does nave woody plant cover greater than 15
percent). The original vegetation baseline inventory states that
conifers..."although visually dominant...contributed only 2.5 percent
cover, owing to the patchiness of their distripution." Therefore, the
necessity of woody plant censity samplinq at all is doubtful, according to
the Division's own definition of a woody vegetation type, if the inventory
of the road corridor vegetation were to stand alone.
