A
MID-CONTINENT RESOURCES
P.O. Box 1298
Glenwood Springs, CO 81602
September 7, 1994 .
SEP 0 8
Steve Renner
Division of Minerals & Geology
1313 Sherman St.
Denver, CO 80203
RE: Water Samples.
Dear Mr. Renner:
During the time the mine was operating Mid-Continent adopted a practice of
sampling discharge from the tunnel on a weekly basis for TSS. This was done
as a means to keep track of the solids loading to the sediment ponds above
outfall 016, and was intended as a means to determine with greater precision
when the ponds needed cleaning. It is not required by the CDES permit.
As the mine has been closed now for several years there is no underground
activity to generate sediment from this source [i.e. the mine flows]. As the
attached chart illustrates TSS levels have been negligible, and have remained
so consistently. There is no useful purpose served by continuing.
For this reason Mid-Continent has determined that sampling of tunnel flows will
be done according to the specific requirements of the CDES permit, so as to
ensure continuing compliance, but we have stopped the weekly TSS sampling of
inflows from the tunnel.
Yours truly,
Diane Delaney
Mid-Continent Resources
