Number 5 Mine Revegetation
The Number 5 Mine was revegetated in 1993, however the project did not
achieve a successfully revegetated condition, therefore a second attempt at
revegetation will occur. Due to the elevation of the Number 5 Mine, this
revegetation project should be undertaken immediately upon CONTRACTOR
mobilization. Seeding will be accomplished using a drill at the Number 5 Mine.
Broadcast on steep slope.
All seed drilling and crimping operations will be operated on contour.
Page 8
Seedbed Preparation
The seedbed shall be firm....
Seedbed preparation shall be suspended when soil moisture conditions are not
suitable for the preparation of a satisfactory seedbed as determined by the
PROJECT MANAGER.
Seeding
Broadcast Seeding. ....Broadcast seed shall be covered about one-quarter(114)
to (112) inch deep by flexible-tine harrowing or a similar method acceptable to
the PROJECT MANAGER. One to two operations maybe required to obtain
adequate coverage as specified by the PROJECT MANAGER.
Page 17
Mulches
Mulch shall consist of hay or straw mulch, pest-free or weed-free to the extent
possible....Hay or straw mulch shall be applied uniformly at the rate of two (2)
tons per acre.
Hydromulch shall be applied at the rate of one and a half(1 112) tons per acre.
Stabilizing Mulch
On areas larger than one (1) acre a mulch crimper shall be used to stabilize or
anchor the mulch into the soil after hay or straw mulch has been spread. ... On
areas less than one acre crimping must be achieved by hand with a suitable
tool, such as a spade, on 18"centers.
Page 18
Mine #5 was seeded and mulched in October, 1993. The area is situated at
approximately 9,000' elevation, and the summer of 1994 has been exceptionally
dry. Based on these factors, it is to be expected that vegetative growth would be
slow. That notwithstanding, the area is vegetating.
Reseeding Mine #5 now is a waste of money. Several years should elapse
before a decision is made as to whether additional seeding is necessary.
MCR Objections/DMG Bid
Page 14
