STATE OF COLORADO
DIVISION OF MINERALS AND GEOLOGY
Department of Natural Resources Of,
co
He' o
1313 Sherman St.,Room 215 * t
Denver,CO 80203
Phone (303)866-3567 *1876
FAX:(303)832-8106
•ti Roy Romer
Governor
Michael B.Long
Division Director
COAL BASIN FACTS
INTRODUCTION:
The purpose of this fact sheet is to respond to some of the most frequently asked
questions regarding the Coal Basin Mine in Pitkin County.
The Coal Basin mine is located southwest of Carbondale and covers 11,000 acres of
which 430 are disturbed by surface activities. The coal mine operated from 1954-1991
producing approximately 1 million tons of coal per year. The operator of the mine, Mid-
Continent Resources Inc. (MCR) filed for bankruptcy in February of 1992. In August of
1992 the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Board revoked the mine permit and
ordered the company to continue reclamation activities. In September 1993 the
Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology (DMG) filed suit against MCR and its
agents. Apart from the lawsuit, the DMG will continue to require the company to work
on erosion and off-site sedimentation problems until the mine is reclaimed. The DMG
will ensure that MCR remains responsible for reclamation of the site. Implementation
of the reclamation plan is being coordinated with the U.S. Forest Service, Colorado
Department of Health, the Office of Surface Mining and local citizen groups.
RECLAMATION ACTIVITIES
Q. How much will reclamation cost? What is the reclamation schedule?
A. The DMG has estimated that the reclamation cost is $3 million. The DMG and
OSM are working together on reviewing reclamation activities and costs. The $3 million
bond is secured by a first lien on a rock dust manufacturing plant near Carbondale. The
Board may consider foreclosure proceedings on the rock dust plant to liquidate the bond
for reclamation purposes. A reclamation schedule is attached.
OVER
