metamorphosed sandstone and shales; cross ripping of road surfaces
on steep road segments; increasing the depth of constructed rolled
dips to approximately eighteen inches; prohibiting vehicular
traffic on roadways following ripping; mandatory task sequencing.
Approximately 35 to 40 acres will be reclaimed during this project.
Coal Stockpiles and Warehouse Project
The overland conveyor route, upper (B) and lower (M) coal
stockpiles, a portion of Road B and the warehouse area will be
reclaimed during this project. A minor amount of drainage control
and revegetation will occur along the conveyor route. Partial
highwall elimination, land form development and drainage control
will be accomplished at the stockpiles and warehouse area. This
will be accomplished by completing structural demolition and
disposal, pushing the highwalls down from north to south across
both stockpile areas and Road B, then creation of drainage swales
within all three areas. Some amount of growth medium will be
generated during the highwall elimination and drainage construction
phases. An estimated 19 acres will be reclaimed during this
project.
Outslope Preparation Project
The purpose of this project is to prepare the mine bench outslopes
for revegetation by creating small benches or dimples on the
outslopes of Mines 3 (north and east slopes) , 1 (south slope) and
4 (north and east slopes) by mechanical means. Road segments
immediately adjacent to these areas will also be prepared for
seeding during this project. Preliminarily, the bid will be
structured so that the result which the Division desires on the
outslopes is specified, along with any constraints which may need
to be imposed. Contractors will propose the method(s) which they
would employ to achieve the desired outcome. Approximately 80
acres will be affected.
Outslope Revegetation Project
This project would immediately follow the Outslope Preparation
Project, accomplishing revegetation of the prepared slopes. As
part of this project, native seed would be collected from two
species found at the site. The collected seed would be planted,
along with compatible commercially available species, on the
outslopes. Approximately 80 acres will be revegetated.
AmeriCorps Tree Planting
Due in large part to the rejection of the tree planting proposal by
Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado, the AmeriCorps National Civilian
Community Corps has been approached to accomplish the tree planting
project. The initial reaction from AmeriCorps is very positive.
They have expressed interest in sending a twelve person crew to the
21
