3.0 TRACER TEST RA T/ONALE
The purpose of the tracer test is to "label" waters which have passed through the
Sunnyside Mine so that such waters can be identified if they discharge to the surface
via springs, seeps, or from mine portals.
Bromide was selected as the tracer because:
background ground-water concentrations of bromide have been
measured at less than 0.01 ppm allowing for low concentrations of the
tracer to be used;
bromide is conservative (i.e., not significantly affected by precipitation,
adsorption, absorption, or biological activity);
laboratory analytical techniques can reasonably detect bromide to 0.01
ppm using an ion chromatographic technique (see Section 4.5); and
Bromide is not a regulated ground-water constituent and is considered
benign at the proposed concentrations of tracer in the mine water.
The quantity of bromide in solution is intended to be at least 25 times the measured
natural background levels of bromide. This concentration will allow for detection of
the bromide even if there is significant dilution between the mine workings and the
surface. However, the average concentration of bromide in waters impounded in the
mine will be approximately one part per million (although local concentrations will be
higher).
sunny\wp\traci\2251\Workplan 693 6
NNl simon HYDRO-SEARCH
