4.0 PROTOCOL FOR PLACEMENT OF TRACER
4. 1 Introduction
The following procedure is intended to provide general guidelines for performing the
tracer work that is proposed for the Sunnyside Mine. The procedure is divided into
five sections: (1 ) background assessment, (2) tracer inoculation, (3) monitoring after
placement of bulkheads, (4) sample collection protocol, and (5) sample analysis. The
procedures, wherever possible, are written in observance of the difficult logistical
problems associated with travel in and around the mine through parts of the year.
4.2 Background Assessment
Selected springs, creeks, and mine tunnel discharges will be monitored for bromide
content before the proposed portals are installed. The objective of the background
assessment is to learn the maximum range of the natural variability of bromide in the
vicinity of the mine. It is critically important to know this information to confidently
assess when changes in concentration of bromide at the sample locations represent
seepage from the mine rather than natural variation in background concentration. The
better the background is defined, the greater the sensitivity of the test. Only samples
collected before the tracer is brought to the site can unequivocally be assumed to
represent the true background. After the tracer is at the site a large variety of factors
can result in low levels contamination in the water samples. Accordingly, the most
su11ny\wp\traci\2251\Workp1an 693 8
N0 simon HYDRO-SEARCH
