road system. Stabilization of the gullies which have developed
below road drainage outlets and on the mine bench outslopes will D
be accomplished through revegetation techniques and construction of
erosion control structures.
(D2) Tasks and Methods
Corps Members are an integral part of fulfillment of the goals of
the proposed project. The project is geared toward minimizing
erosion, containing sediment and healing of existing erosional
features by the planting of trees and shrubs, and by construction
l
of erosion control structures. Corps Members will be involved in V
all three phases of the project, as described below.
The tree planting portion of the project will involve establishment
of seedling trees on the mine benches above the mine bench
outslopes. It is anticipated that this activity will occur at each
of the five mines. The mine entries have been safeguarded and
backfilled, so that there is no underground access. The goal of, ._..
the project is to plant 200 trees per acre on approximately 28
acres. Trees will be planted in a random pattern by using a
'hoedad' or similar tool to excavate an approximately twelve inch
hole in the soil. A seedling previously soaked in water containing
polyacrylamide will be placed roots first into the hole. Soil wil
be packed around the roots of the seedlings. A small water
containment berm, eighteen inches in circumference and six inches
in height, will be constructed around each seedling. A small sun
shade, such as a piece of cedar shake, will be placed on edge on
the south side of each seedling to provide shade. It is estimated
that each corps member can plant 20 seedlings per hour. Access to
the vicinity of each mine bench will be by vehicle.
The tree and shrub planting portion of the project will be
completed at the base of four of the five mine bench outslopes.
The purpose of this phase of the project is to slow water draining
from the outslopes, and to retain sediment which is transportedPx
the runoff. Approximately fifteen acres will be impacted by thi's
project. Access to these areas will be involve travel by foot.
/ It is anticipated that 300 seedling trees will be planted per acre,
using the same method as that described for thej ine entry areas/
Additionally, 300 shrubs per acre will be planted in a random
pattern to compliment the tree planting. These will be planted in/
a similar manner as the trees, except that the hole will be nine
inches in depth, and that a sun shade is not necessary.
The erosion control structures will be constructed within existing
gullies which generally have formed as a result of road drainage
problems. A number of simple, yet effective, techniques will be
employed. In some areas, rock sediment traps will be constructe
in the gullies. A trench approximately eighteen inches wide an
nine inches deep will be hand dug perpendicular to the orientation
4
