STATE OF C OLORADO
DIVISION OF WILDLIFE
Aquatic_ Section, Northwest Region
November 25, 1991
Lane Wyatt
Northwest Council of Governments
Box 739
Frisco, Colorado 8044
Dear Lane
This s is to let you know !i our plans for the Crystal River over the
next few years. As we discussed, habitat conditions in the Crystal
preclude managing it as a wild trout fishery. The frequent and ma=sip_
input of fines from Coal Creek and ether tributaries depress aquatic
insect populations to the point that trout numbers are very low, excep7
for those we stock. We intend to manage the Crystal as a put-and-take
fishery with an 8-fish limit and no restrictions can tackle Q . e. , bai
allowed) .
Access to Coldwater streams is the Northwest Region' s top priority.
We have had success in trading stream consultant services for public
access. We plan to continue with that effort on the Crystal and I ' d
guess that over the next five years we' ll do three to five stream
stabilization projects there, averaging about $10, 000 each. In a
typical project of this type, we provide design, permitting and
construction supervision, and we often donate a large part of the
materials used.
Assuming that the Forest Service, Pitk:in County and the Mined Lanc
Reclamation Division require appropriate corrective actions from
whoever buys the Mid-Continent property, and that you are successful i7
securing 319 funds for a sediment reduction project can lower Coal
Creek:, we would be happy t d macro invertebrate sampling and to
i
establish Trout Stream Inventory indices in order to monitor the
effectiveness of these fines control measures.
Good luck: in your efforts. I sincerely appreciate the energy y'=u7
expended so far and I thank you n behalf of Colorado sportsmen who uErE
the Crystal .
Siinncerely Yours,
4-
C
Alan Czenk:usch
Aquatic Habitat Bilogist
CZNlpbp
: Sealing, Wright
