This is a very effective way of accurately budgeting for the future. Using
only the lowest previous bid would almost certainly lead to an estimate that is
too low.
Administrative / Management / Supervision Costs
Administration of this project is not being charged to this project. If
administrative costs were being charged to this project, the project would be
significantly more expensive.
Administrative costs typically range between 15 and 25 percent of the
total cost of a project. The Administration and Supervision line items in a budget
I prepared during 1998 for a reclamation project totaled 20 percent. At 15 to 25
percent, administration for this $3 million project would be anticipated to cost
between $450,000 and $750,000. For the DMG's portion of the project, $2.2
million, administration would be anticipated to cost between $330,000 and
$550,000.
A letter from the Director of the DMG to CVEPA dated January 15, 1999
indicates that $300,000 in salaries directly related to Project Management had
been expended on this project between July 1 , 1994 and December 31 , 1998.
This value includes fringe benefits but does not include office rental and utilities,
supplies, phone, transportation, and per diem travel expenses. A follow-up
letter from the DMG dated March 31 , 1999 detailed the expenses associated
with the project as shown in the following table.
Additional Administrative Expenses
• Office Rental and utilities $6,100
• Phone $12,350
• Transportation $26,300
• Per Diem $8,200
4
