Mr.Mechau and I were confirming a previously arranged tour of the Coal Basin
Mine scheduled for August 3, 1999. During the course of the conversation,Mr. Mechau mentioned that he
had invited State Senator Ken Chlouber, and Representatives Russell George and Dan Sullivan to attend
the tour. He also mentioned that he had invited these officials to attend a meeting of the CVEPA scheduled
for the same evening. Minerals and Geology is also scheduled to attend the evening meeting.
The purpose of the tour is to continue to provide opportunities for the public to be involved in the
reclamation process at Coal Basin. Previously reclaimed areas will be visited. An active reclamation
construction project site will also be visited.
I understand from Mr.Mechau that the purpose of the evening meeting is to discuss local issues, and in
particular the settlement agreement which the Division,Pitkin County and Mid-Continent Resources
recently entered into. It is my understanding that Mr.Mechau wishes to question the State Representatives
and the Division about the details of the settlement agreement, and about how the State intends to proceed
should the available funds prove insufficient to complete reclamation.
I plan on attending the evening meeting, but perhaps another member of the staff should also be present. It
may also be advisable to ask Cheryl Linden of the Office of the Attorney General to attend the meeting
with me that evening.
