Non — Point Source Grant
Following the 2000 construction season, the Non — Point source Grant has an
approximate balance of$60,596.00. Of this amount, about half is earmarked for
development of educational materials, site maintenance and site monitoring, while the
remainder is earmarked for personnel time and expenses. This Grant will expire in
December, 2002, unless a modification is sought to help fund additional outslope
stabilization work.
Future Projects / Site Needs / Recommendations
Steep Slope Revegetation Evaluation and Re-Design
As noted above, the mine bench outslopes which were revegetated in 1999 should be
carefully evaluated in 2001. If, as expected, the south facing slopes exhibit a less than
desired vegetative cover, then a decision to undertake the Project again should be
made. The recommended modifications addressed above should be carefully
considered and a cost to accomplish these steps should be estimated. An application
to modify the Non-Point Source Grant should be submitted in the summer of 2001 in
order to secure some level of additional funding from Water Quality Control Division to
more fully accommodate the cost of Project modifications.
Upper Coal Creek
The Upper Coal Creek Project is an AML funded Project designed to remove pre-law
coal refuse from Coal Creek near Mine 5. The Project will also address vegetative
stabilization of the pre-law north facing mine bench outslope just south of Mine 5. The
Project is funded for construction during 2002.
Bear Creek Fence
A solar powered electric fence or a barbed wire fence should be erected around the
Bear Creek Project Area following snow melt in 2001. This area, which was re-seeded
in the fall of 2000, requires protection from grazing cattle if vegetation is to become
successfully established.
Weed Control
Weed control efforts should continue for at least three more construction seasons.
Continued monitoring of the established plots is desirable, as is the establishment of
new monitoring points within areas of new infestation. Continued reliance on other
agency personnel in helping to monitor these reference areas is desirable, and should
continue.
Flume Vicinity
The area at the end of the old flume where Dutch Creek used to cascade into Coal
Creek is in need of some earth work in order to achieve a greater measure of stability.
It is recommended that this work be undertaken in 2001. Work here would eliminate the
steep, dangerous slopes on the east and west sides of the old flume end point, and
14
