ANNUALREPORT
COAL BASIN MINE RECLAMATION
2001 CONSTRUCTION
Summary
Reclamation work at Coal Basin in 2001 was directed at completing earth work and
revegetation in the vicinity of the old flume, and at maintaining previously reclaimed
areas.
Maintenance was accomplished by inventorying the majority of the reclaimed areas at
the site, and developing a priority list of objectives to be accomplished. Most of the
maintenance accomplished focused on additional drainage control along the roads
reclaimed in 2000, and along the Sutey Refuse Disposal Area perimeter ditch. Weed
control and construction of a fence around the previously reclaimed Bear Creek Project
Area were accomplished as part of the overall maintenance effort.
Reclamation of the slope at the previous location of the flume outfall was accomplished.
The overly steep slope in this area was reconstructed, topsoil was applied, and the area
was roughened, seeded and mulched.
Field work for anticipated 2002 Projects was accomplished. One of the two Projects to
be completed in 2002 was bid and awarded in the fall of 2001.
Monitoring of the Mine Bench Outslopes continued in 2001. Site specific
measurements were obtained, and future maintenance needs were identified.
Compliance with the two Storm Water permits was maintained throughout the year.
One of these permits may be terminated in 2002.
The Bond Forfeiture Account had an approximate balance of$301,870 at the end of
2001. 2002 expenditures, excluding maintenance costs, are projected to vary between
$70,000 and $140,000.
Public outreach diminished in 2001, as reclamation neared completion. Public
presentations were made in Redstone, and new Forest Service personnel were toured
through the site.
