remaining portions of the mine, and restrict grazing in those areas for a two year period.
This rotational program would create a need for a high intensity grazing management
program during the summers of 2006 and 2007, with many portions of the basin re-
opening to grazing in 2008.
I realize that a rotational grazing program may be an inconvenience to the local
cattlemen's association, and possibly to the Forest Service as well, and that it is work
intensive for all involved. However,we need to investigate ways to maximize the
potential for reclamation to be as successful as possible, particularly prior to the Division
terminating its involvement at the site. Further, the relatively short term sacrifice of
additional work by us all could lead to significantly enhanced vegetative cover and
further reductions in site sediment contribution to Coal and Dutch Creeks.
I would appreciate the opportunity to discuss this proposal, and any alternatives that the
Forest Service may have, with you and your staff. Perhaps we could arrange to meet in
the near future to discuss this proposal. To facilitate the discussion I am attaching a map
of Coal Basin that delineates the reclaimed facilities.
Please feel free to contact me at the phone or address below.
Sincerely
Steve Renner
Project Manager
Division of Minerals and Geology
101 South P Street,Room 301
Grand Junction,Colorado 81501
Phone: 970-241-0336
FAX: 970-241-1516
Cc: Jim McArdle
David Berry
Andrea Holland-Sears
