Summary of Volumes
Mines
Aerial photography from 1976 was used to create maps for each mine
site at a contour interval of 5 feet . These maps were digitized
into computer through the use of AUTOCAD and Engineering Data
Systems software. Final topography maps were then developed which
were based on restoring the mines to their approximate original
contour . It was assumed that almost all material for backfilling
would be brought to the sites from some other location since very
little cut material can be used from the steep fill slopes . No
backfilling yardages are included for the rock tunnel area and the
main yard area. If these are included , the totals below should be
increased by approximately 150, 000 cubic yards . The following table
summarizes the volumes needed:
(all volumes are in cubic yards)
Mine # Fill Volume Cut Volume Net Volume Needed
1 , 2 554 , 698 19 , 621 535 , 077
3 537 , 778 1 , 383 536 , 395
4 282 ,430 3,898 278 , 532
5 576 , 112 10 , 577 565 , 535
-------------------
Mines Total : 1 , 915 , 539 c.y.
Roads
Permit data and measurement show that there is a total length of
77850 feet of roads in the permit area. The average road width is
37 feet and the average fill area needed per foot of length is
656 . 9 feet . See enclosed cross-section titled "Road Reclamation
Volumes" . An approximate volume needed to reclaim the roads to
original contour is given below:
Length = 77850 ft - 3900 ft (included in mine calculations above)
= 73950 ft .
Volume = 73950 ft x 656 . 9 ft = 48 , 577 , 755 cu . ft. = 1 , 799 , 176 c . y .
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Total Volume Needed for Mines and Roads = 3, 714, 715 c. y.
if this material were to be dug from a borrow area to a depth of 10
feet, the borrow area would be 230 acres in size. This is an area
approximately 3167 feet long by 3167 feet wide.
