/ OPTION 1
Reduce crest of fill slope and
_z backfill against lower portion
of cut slope.
\ / OPTION 2
f ^ Leave fill alone. Dig new ditch
inside current far enough to
reduce travel width as desired and
backfill ditch excavation against
highwall at moderate slope .
Final reclamation would entail elimination of all culverts , enlargement
of water bars and ripping and seeding of reduced road surfaces .
Additional grading might be required in some cases .
Interim treatment of portal pads might entail some combination of debris
clean up, removal of dilapidated structures , gravel surfacing, limited
grading, and reseeding. At most portal sites , installation of additional
sediment control measures at base of fill slopes will be necessary
(dikes , sediment ponds , filter fences , etc . ) . Some measures obviously
could be done fairly quickly and without significant modification of
existing plan ( i .e. filter fabric fences) . Basic maintenance and repairs
of existing road and portal drainage control structures as necessary to
comply with currently approved plan will require immediate attention.
3. Upgrade Roads for Operational Use as Haulage Roads
Slope stabilization and improved drainage would still be necessary,
although road width reduction might not be appropriate. Maintenance plan
would have to address method for ditch clean out and snow removal that
will minimize spoil material being pushed over the outslope. This has
negatively impacted steep slope revegetation efforts in the past.
Additional culverts and/or rolling dips would be needed in a number of
locations , along with other measures to reduce flow velocities and
volumes as necessary to minimize erosion and allow sediment to be
filtered out before road drainage reaches live water courses . Additional
measures might include , but not be limited to lining road ditches with
riprap or installation of rock chec:cs in eroding ditch segments ,
construction of sediment traps or ponds , and installation of filter fence
barriers along the base of road fills which are adjacent to water courses .
-z-
