The work was conducted by Intermountain Soils, Inc. under
contract to Mid-Continent Resources, Inc. , operator of the mine. The inven-
tories are intended to satisfy certain regulatory requirements of the Colorado
Division of Mined Land Reclamation (the Division) , as well as to provide
resource information useful in the reclamation planning process.
Vegetation inventories were conducted in three separate areas, each proposed
for future development by Mid-Continent. Description of the gas well road
inventoried area is as follows.
Gas Well Access Road. The inventoried area is a proposed road alignment
corridor, approximately a mile in length, below the summit of Huntsman Ridge,
between 11,300 feet and 11,600 feet in elevation. A subalpine spruce-meadow
vegetation type characterized by mostly open meadow areas interspersed with
small clusters of Englemann spruce was identified. The corridor sampled was
approximately 200 feet either side of the centerline alignment.
METHODS
Vegetation Mapping. Vegetation types were distinguished primarily by the
visually dominant overstory vegetation. Each vegetation type was sampled for
vegetation cover by species and herbaceous production by life form. All types
were also sampled for woody plant density.
