all but the southeast end from Dutch Creek.
The entire berm is covered with rock and vegetation. The outer
slope of the southeast end has been seeded and mulched to enhance
the vegetative cover. A straw berm has been placed around the toe.
4. South Portal at No. 1 Mine.
This area is a rock bench, .18 acre in size. This area was
developed for a ventilation opening. The bench itself slopes into
the hillside. Surrounding terrain is extremely steep,
characterized in places by sheer cliff faces.
The rock of the beach is a durable, non-erosive material, so
sediment loss is not 4 concern. The USLE is not applicable to this
area as there is no soil loss from the rock bench itself. There is
a net sediment deposition on the relatively flat bench from the
weathering of the undisturbed steep hillside above, so this area
actually has the effect of decreasing sediment level in the runoff
from the hillside.
A berm has been constructed across the lowest end (southwest side)
of the bench area to contain run-off from the bench.
5. 016 Pond Topsoil Stockpile
This stockpile measures .11 acre in size, and is very well
vegetated. It sits on the west side of Pond C of the 016 pond
series, and borders the road around the lower side of the pond.
Below the westerly two-thirds of the pile is an undisturbed area
which is well vegetated, and there is a natural berm consisting of
river rock and a substantial concentration of drift wood around the
toe. To the north is the stream buffer zone which separates the
ponds from Dutch Creek.
We do not believe that there is any contribution of sediment to
Dutch Creek as a result of the good vegetative cover, and
construction of berms or catchment basins below, or downslope, of
this pile would be an unnecessary and counterproductive
disturbance.
The upslope portion of the pile borders the embankment of Pond C.
This is a flat area and berms have been constructed on either side,
extending to the pond, to direct any potential runoff to Pond C.
6. No. 1 Mine Substation
This area measures .04 acre and is taken up in part by concrete
3
