Box 1298
Glenwood Springs . CO 81602
RE : Past control of road erosion .
Dear Diane :
rrcm miy investigation of the mine roads throughout the Summer of
1993 and from 15 years of experience with construction , reclamation
and slope stability . ! am able to provide you with so,,e
observations regaroing ongo', ng ma-- r,tenance and final reclamation of
these roads .
Listed are rny observations as a registered professional
encirea, Colorado , concerning past road erosion control , ongoing
ma r:era ce and final reclamation .
1 ) Site visits have shown that erosion has taken place on the road
fill slopes and ditches . However , when the current condition of the
roads are studied carefully , it is seer, that many of the gullies ,
water discharge points and road ditches have reached relative
ec 11 br u
All of the approximately 15 miles of roads were created by a
bulldoze - Working the inside edge of the roads into the cut slope
and spoiling the material on the outside edge , which then became
the fill slope . Aerial photos show that most of this work was done
in t-.e 1950 ' s and all of it was done prior to 1977 , thereby
classifying all roads as pre- law . When these roads were initially
created , the newly disturbed ground and steep slopes of downspoiled
material resulted in significant erosion . However , it is extremely
impo-tart to make a distinction between the erosion that occurred
in the early years after the roaC, were built compared to that
wh , cn is now occurring . Many gullies nave worked their way down to
a point where stable rock or the original ground is now found .
Vegetation is now present on a significant portion of the slopes
and has also reduced erosion over the years . In short , although the
erosion has taken place on the roads , most of it occurred a lore
time ago . i doubt if runoff samples fro-- Gu areas are
