Sample Characterization
Table 2 describes the variation in 5 samples taken over a period of 2 weeks.
TSS solids varied from 0.34% to a maximum of 1.9%. There is a possibility that the
technique of collecting a sample from an open channel may have gathered up settled coarse
solids on the channel bottom since 54 samples taken over a 12 month period averaged only
0.14% TSS with a maximum of 0.54%.
Coarse solids (+35 mesh) varied from 0.8% to 33.2%. The -200 mesh content ranged from
22% to 51%. Iron analysis of a decanted sample (after flocculation and settling with Nalco
9707) varied from 0.3 to 0.9 ppm. Sample pH was quite uniform at 8.3 to 8.5.
Forward Pro ram
These results indicate that an alternate treatment system should be investigated wherein a
single clarification pond is used to remove flocculated solids from a -200 mesh fraction of
mine drainage. A hydroclone or wet screen can be used as the primary device to separate
coarse coal solids ahead of flocculation and ponding. Detention time in a one-half acre pond
with 4 feet of water available for settling would be about 14 hours (800 gpm).
Two gallon samples of mine drainage water should be treated with Nalco 9707 at 1 ppm and
3 ppm and the decanted water samples submitted for Chronic Toxicity Testing
(Biomonitoring).
Sincerely,
J.E.
