Process Flow Descri tp ion
[See Process Flow Diagram)
Note: Numbers Correspond to Description
Present System
1. "White pipe" conveys flow from underground workings to the
surface through the rock tunnel .
2 . Mine water is flocculated on leaving the tunnel.
3 . Mine water flows to the three-pond series of Outfall 016 for
settling prior to discharge to Dutch Creek.
Underground Sizing Screen
4. Underground grit screen removes coarse solids.
Water Treatment Plant
5. Mine water is routed (at valve box) through pipeline to
recycle sump/hydrocyclone of mine water treatment plant*.
6. Underflow from recycle sump/hydroclone, containing middling
solids, goes into the coal preparation plant cycle.
(Alternative: underfloor goes to 001 ponds. )
7. Overflow from the recycle sump/hydroclone, containing very
fine (-200 mesh) solids proceeds to flocculation, then to
"finishing" (i.e. settling of fine solids) in sediment pond at
outfall 020 (Alternative: 001 pond(s) used for "finishing")
8. Flocculant tank.
9. Mine water is flocculated.
10 . Hydroclone segregates middling solids (to underflow) . Recycle
tank and pump maintain continuous rate of flow to the
hydroclone inlet through recirculation of hydroclone vortex
(overflow) to the recycle sump, from which surplus water
overflows and reports for flocculation.
* Mine Water Treatment Plant refers to the system for
mechanical cleaning and flocculation of mine drainage.
** Coal Preparation Plant refers to the system which
separates coal from non-coal refuse.
