STATE OF COLORADO
MINED LAND RECLAMATION DIVISION
Department of Natural Resources
Few'
1313 Sherman St.,Room 215
Denver,CO 80203
303 866-3567 *1876
FAX 303 832-8106 _.
Roy Romer,
Governor
R.Banta,
April 24, 1991 DredonDirect
Division Director
Ms. Diane Delaney
Mid-Continent Resources , Inc.
201 Centennial Street, Suite 406
Drawer 122
Glenwood Springs , Colorado 81601
RE: Water Sample Results
File: C-81-017
Dear Ms. Delaney:
Enclosed are total suspended solids (TSS) and settleable solids analyses for
water samples I obtained at the Coal Basin Mine on April 3, 1991 , Sample
#911525 was taken from the mine water discharge stream above the 016 pond
series; #911526 was taken at the NPDES discharge point at the outfall from the
lower-most pond in the 016 series; #911527 was taken from the NPDES discharge
point at the outfall from the lower-most pond in the 001 series.
Snow melt runoff was occurring at the time of the inspection and melt water
was entering both the 016 and 001 pond series at the time the samples were
taken . Given these facts , settleable solids is the applicable standard under
the NPDES permit, and both pond discharge samples indicate compliance with the
standard (less than .5 ml s/1 ) based on both the DOH analysis and Imhoff Cone
tests I ran on April 4. While TSS is not the applicable standard in this
instance, the relatively high TSS levels in both pond discharge samples is of
concern and the Division will continue to monitor the ponds on a regular
basis . Treatment of the ponds with approved settling agents would appear to
be warranted to insure future compl iance wi th TSS 1 imi tations .
Please contact me if you have any questions or comments.
Sincere y,
Dan T.
