.. s
Mr. Jim Herron December 21, 1983 Page 2
All sediment ponds will remain until a substantial vegetation cover is
established, then, depending on the post-mining use, either all or a selected
few will be removed.
The main fill on the proposed No. 1 Mine coal stockpile area is on a
north slope (more moisture), and in two to five years after construction will
have a very diverse vegetative cover (example: the refuse pile) . The life of
the mine is from 30 to 50 years and at the end of that time the fill would
certainly resemble the surrounding undisturbed forest. We think it would be
environmentally unsound to remove the vegetation and pull the fill back up at
that time just to change the grade on the pad a few degrees.
In summary, we believe:
a. That this is industrial commercial land.
b. This will constitute an equal or better use.
c. It is in compliance with our post-mining land use.
d. The watershed during reclamation would produce significantly
less total suspended solids.
e. The owner of adjoining public lands approves of this post-
mining land use.
Please contact me if you have any questions or comments regarding this
matter.
Sincerely,
Environmental Coordinator
DWBowman:ms
Enclosures
