1.0 INTRODUCTION <br /> A baseline vegetation study was conducted at the Coal Canyon Mine <br /> project site in Mesa County, Colorado, during the 1981 growing season. <br /> The objective of the study was to quantitatively describe the vegeta- <br /> tion type affected by ,proposed mining activities and develop a method <br /> for measuring reveget tion success as required by the Colorado Surface <br /> Coal Mining Reclamation Act. <br /> The project is locatec in western Colorado approximately 10 miles <br /> northeast of Grand Ju ction. The study area includes a southeast- <br /> northwest oriented segment of Coal Canyon which has steep southwest <br /> and northeast facing slopes and elevations ranging from a low of 5360 <br /> to a high of 6680 feet. <br /> -1- <br />
