IThe area encompassing toe road ccrridcr was mapped as
Dart of this invent as the spruce/fir parKlana vegetation type. The
road corridor area was not sampled, nowever. But a considerable area of
this vegetation typewas sampled in the original inventory and a reference
area was establishd. Therefore, information contained in the Coal Basin
Mine permit application already includes quite a bit of information about
this vegetation typ _ Sample adequacy was achieved for this vegetation
type in the original vegetation inventory.
Tnis situation is exactly the same as the situation with the aspen
vegetation type atlthe Sutey property. in that case, the Division deemed
it not to be necessary to re-sample this type completely There should be
no reason to do it for the proposed road either. (See MaD I I i-H-2 of the
permit application.)
r,
According, to 0-3jcy of tne (liviclnn
not required for communities where woody plant .over is less than ?
percent. The measured cover for woody species for the das well
exploration road is only 7.4 percent. Altnough tree canopy cover was-
not measured, it i likely that combined woody plant overstory ano
understory cover is less than l S percent for the qas well exploration
road area by itself (the spruce/fir Darklana type considered over the
entire inventoried area does nave woody plant cover greater than '5
percent). The original vegetation baseline inventory states that
con ifers..."although visually dominant...contriDuted only 2.5 Dercent
cover, owing to tree patchiness of their distribution." Tnerefore, the
necessity of woody plant density samplinq at all is doubtful, according to
the Division's own deaetation
finition of a woody vegetation type, if the inventory
of the road corridor were to stand alone.
