STATE OF COLORADO
DIVISION OF MINERALS AND GEOLOGY
Department of Natural Resources PVW
1 313 Sherman St., Room 215
Denver,Colorado 80203
Phone:(303)866-3567
FAX-(303)832-8106
DEPARTMENT OF
September 24, 1997 NATURAL
RESOURCES
MEMO
Roy Romer
Governor
TO: Minerals and Geology Staff James S.Lochhead
Executive Director
FROM: Steve Renner - Michael D.Long
Division Director
RE: Volunteer Tree Planting, Coal Basin Mine
We will be doing a volunteer tree planing project at the Coal Basin
Mine on Thursday and Friday, October 2 and 3 , 1997. Colorado Rocky
Mountain School in Carbondale, and the Aspen School are sending
students to help plant rees. CRMS is sending 10 students to the
mine on Thursday and Friday. Aspen School is sending 100 students
on Friday. We need staff from Minerals and Geology to help with
set up and planting trees (Thursday) and to lead planting teams of
student volunteers on Friday. Our goal is to plant about 3 ,000
trees over the two days.
On Thursday, I'll needlabout three people to help in the morning
getting trees, tools and materials to the planting areas. In the
afternoon these volunt ers and any other volunteers will plant
trees. On Friday, we will need up to 15 people to act as planting
team leaders. I'd like to split the Aspen School people into
groups of four or five, each with a Division employee as a leader.
This small work group approach to planting trees helps keep
everyone involved, an allows the students to interact with
Division staff.
The work schedule on Thursday is 8:00 to 5:00, and 8:00 to 3 :30 on
Friday. We will meet at the Coke Ovens (opposite the south
entrance to Redstone) each morning.
The weather in Coal Bast in October can either be quite pleasant,
or very obnoxious. Be ppared for wet, cold and windy conditions,
and hope for sun. Yo will need to supply work gloves, sun
screen, hat, water proof boots, rain coat, warm sweater. . .
remember, we are working at 10,000 feet.
Please coordinate with our supervisor regarding over night stay,
travel and authorizatio to help. There is a sign up sheet in the
refrigerator room. Ple se sign up by Monday afternoon, (September
29) so that we can make final arrangements with the schools.
Staff from Denver will need to coordinate travel arrangements.
Some area motels are the Crystal Valley Manor (Redstone; 970-963-
