5TATE OF COLORADO
DIVISION OF MINERALS AND GEOLOGY
Department of Natural Resources
1 313 Sherman St., Room 215
Denver,Colorado 80203
Phone (303)866-3567 WN
FAX-(303)832-8106
September 30, 1997 DEPARTMENT OF
NATURAL
MEMO RESOURCES
Roy Romer
TO: Coal and Inactive Mines Sta f Governor
James S Lochhead
FROM• Steve Renner Executive Director
• Michael B Long
RE: Volunteer Tree Planting Division Director
Well, the tree plantin details seem to change quite regularly.
This is, I hope, the final version of what we will be doing
Thursday and Friday.
Colorado Rocky Mountain School (CRMS) will be at the mine around
mid-morning on Thursday. They are bringing ten students and two
adults. CRMS will be c mping at the mine Thursday night, and will
work through mid-aftern on Friday. CRMS will be working at Mine 4.
Aspen Middle School is now bringing 120 students on Thursday,
rather than Friday. They will be at the site at about 9:45, and
will be staying only until about 1:30 that afternoon. Aspen
Elementary will be sending 40 fifth graders to the site on Friday
morning. The Aspen stu ents will be working on the upper most 1/4
mile of the road to Mires 1 and 2.
I could use help Thursday morning to lead the Aspen Middle School
students, and to start. bringing tools, trees and miscellaneous
equipment to their work area, and afterwards to the CRMS work area.
Anyone who can be at a mine gate by 9:40 Thursday will get to
work with the Aspen stu ents. If you arrive between 9:00 and 9:40,
drive about a mile pa t the mine gate to the Lamphouse (block
building on the north side of the road) . I will either be there,
or I will leave a note1just inside the door. Anyone who arrives
after 9:40 should drive to Mines 1 and 2 (see attached map) .
On Friday, we will meet at the Coke Ovens at 8:30 a.m. Anyone
arriving after that should drive to Mines 1 and 2. Friday we will
split up to help the As pen and CRMS students.
Currently, the weather at Coal Basin is beautiful, as are the fall
colors. However, a cooling trend with cloud cover is predicted on
Friday, so be prepared for rain, snow, wind, sun. . . . Susan McCannon
has generously donated lunch on Friday, but bring plenty of water.
