June 7, 2012 C- 1981- 008/New Horizon Mine MPB
Centrally located along the high -wall a spoil spring SS 43 issued from the lower portion of the high -wall of the
Nucla Mine after mining ceased in 1983. The spring is now described as abandoned and has not been monitored
since 1987. We inspected the entire length of the high -wall and lower backfill area for evidence of any spring or
seepage. Re- disturbance of the area including the remnant high -wall is proposed for later this year. A panoramic
view of the Nucla Mine highwall is shown in Photo No. 5.
The CCC ditch located above the high -wall is now piped. The ditch used to feed a stock pond located at the
Garvey property atop the high -wall but the pond is now entirely dry (Photo No. 6). The source of water for the
SS113 spring was likely irrigation water. Now that this source is removed the spring is no longer flowing. There
was no evidence of a spring along the entire length of the old high -wall or in the spoil area below. There is an
abundance of Willows and a few Cottonwoods growing below the top of the high -wall probably due to the
irrigation water and seepage from the former stock pond (Photo No. 7).
As agreed to by WFC and the DRMS, an additional nest of three down -dip groundwater monitoring wells is to be
installed before disturbance associated with NHN begins. These wells (GW -N56, GW -N57, and GW -N58) have
not yet been constructed. The wells will be located in the southwest area of the NHN permit area north of the
Peabody Nucla Mine highwall. Please ensure that these wells are installed prior to any disturbance at the NHN
Mine.
DOCUMENTS RECEIVED
None
OTHER (SPECIFY)
Number of Partial Inspection this Fiscal Year: 11
Number of Complete Inspections this Fiscal Year: 4
Page 3 of 7
