Jim Herron
Mined Land Reclamation Division - n
423 Centennial Building \ '' ,n•;'.•:°
1313 Sherman St .
Denver, Colorado 80203
Subject : Old Refuse Pile Monitoring
Dear Jim:
Enclosed are the records of our ground water monitoring
system for the old refuse pile. They were drilled the first
of October , 1982 (see enclosed location map) .
You will note that Nos . 1, 2 , 3 , 7 and 8 have water in
them. No. 1 is above the pile and just happens to be in an
area of springs and seeps. Nos . 2 and 3 are in the upper part
of the pile (1977 and after) . Nos . 4 , 5 and 6 are spread along
the top of the old face and are all dry. Nos . 7 and 8 are
below the pile. Note that No . 8 is adjacent to the lower sedi-
ment ponds.
If you inspect the map it shows the pre-mining (refuse
pile) contours and clearly shows a small valley cutting east
across the pile towards the old pile. I believe the No . 3 goes
into the mouth of this old valley, and that No . 2 represents
the bottom or middle of the old valley that was present before
the upper part of the pile was built (see also Placita Quad
sheet ) . I believe this flow follows the old Dutch Creek channel
(see Quad) .
I 'm also enclosing the water quality samples from these
wells.
The following list contains the water surface measurements
for the eight wells :
FEET TO WATER FROM SURFACE
DATE 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 REMARKS
10/82 dry dry dry dry dry dry dry dry
11/83 8 . 0 63. 5 100. 8 0 0 0 9. 1 8 . 5 samples
2/83 8. 1 64 . 7 101 . 0 0 0 0 9. 0 8. 2
3/83 7. 0 64 . 6 98 . 0 0 0 0 9. 0 7. 6
4/83 6. 3 64 . 6 94 . 7 0 0 0 8. 9 7 . 3 samples
