The new stream channel will replace a portion of the existing
Dutch Creep channel and the Dutch Creek.flume. The new stream
channel alleviates the potential failure of the Dutch Creels flume due to the
volume of water and the amount of materials that are deposited in the area
as a result of snowmelt during runoff seasons and other.storm events.
Residents living along Coal Creek and the Crystal Rimer may notice a
change in the amount of sediment over the next couple of weeks while the
new channel is tieing established. The new stream channel is routed
through the former mine facilities area and will flow more naturally into
Coal Creek, Diversion of the water into t'.e new Dutch Creek Stream
channel will result in a temporary increase of sediment in Coal Creek and
the Crystal River.
When: Diversion activities will begin on November 5, 1998.
Where: Coal Basin mine is located 4 miles west of Redstone,Colorado
Streams and creeks affected by the increased sediment will be
Coal Creek and the Crystal River.
Background: The DMG has been performing reclamation at the Coal Basin mine since
Mid-Continent Resources Inc,, operators of the mine in Pitkin County filed bankruptcy in
February of 1992. Reclamation work began in 1995 and to date over 150 acres have been
reeWmed. Reclamation funds were received by the state through bankruptcy proceedings
and federal grants.
Contact: Steve Renner—970-241-0336 cell phone: 970-250-5478
Loretta.Pined*—303-866-3819
