1
COlo-rG.d.Q'v'te.Vl.GO f
Jo4 vi.E)e*wer
March 23, 1998
Mr. John Rosenow
President
National Arbor Day Foundation
PO Box 81412
Lincoln, NE 68501-1412
Dear John:
My name is Evelyn Pinney, and I represent the Colorado Friends of John Denver. We
are an informal group of about 60 Colorado residents, who joined together to continue
the many projects that John Denver started here in Colorado.
Firstly, I wish to thank you and the NADF for remembering and recognizing John Denver
and his many contributions to our environment. It is our understanding that contributions
have been received from all over the nation for the John Denver Memorial Grove. I
have been diligently working the Kevin Sander to make this grove a reality. Kevin has
been quite helpful to date, and I thought I would recap my understanding of
developments thus far:
1. 1 understand that the NADF has committed to a grant of$7,500 to the State of
Colorado for trees in the Memorial Grove. I was given Mr. Steve Renner's name, of the
Colorado Division of Minerals, as the contact with the State on this grant.
2. The NADF also has agreed to provide funds for some type of memorial plaque on
this site.
3. In talking to Mr. Renner the first time, he was unaware that the grant monies were
specifically designated for a John Denver Memorial Grove. I have forwarded him a copy
of the NADF press releases and newsletter, specifying the Memorial Grove, for his files.
4. 1 have spoken with Mr. Renner, and Kevin Sander about the possibility of a Volunteer
Tree Planting Day at the Grove on August 15, 1998. This would be part of a three-day
John Denver Memorial Gathering in Aspen.
5. Mr. Renner told me I would have to coordinate the volunteer day with the US Forest
Service, and I have contacted Mr. Kevin Reardon of the White River National Forest -
Sopris District. Mr. Reardon had no previous knowledge of the Memorial Grove.
