v
MEMO to David Buckner
February 19, 1999—Vegetation Comments/Coal Basin
Page 3
7) Please address the following items in the context of the report:
What techniques, if any, could be incorporated into the steep slope revegetation
practices outlined in the "North Basin Steep Slope Revegetation Project" in order to
enhance the potential for successfully revegetating steep slopes?;
- Is the seed mixture and application rate adequate and/or appropriate for the site
conditions?;
- Please provide your thoughts on the Division's practice of collecting and
redistributing seeds from Calamagrostis purpurascens at steep slope areas;
- Given Dan Mathews' findings regarding cover and diversity, please reflect upon the
relative success of the demonstration projects accomplished to date at Mine 1 and
Road D;
- Is the Division's approach to steep slope aggressive enough? If not, please suggest
changes in methodology;
- Please comment on the price bid to accomplish the "North Basin Steep Slope
Revegetation Project". Note that the additive alternates are not guaranteed to be used.
If anything, only Biosol or manure may be used, and then on a limited basis at areas
accessible by vehicle. Note that the price bid includes the cost to repair damage to
any previously reclaimed area. The contractor has stated that he thought the amount
of work required to accomplish any required road remediation would be so negligible
that any cost would be inconsequential and, therefore, included no additional cost to
the bid price.
8) If appropriate, please comment on reclamation success, in its initial stages, given the cover
estimates and species composition data, which Dan Mathews compiled.
cc: Michael Long
David Bucknam
Jim McArdle
Cheryl Linden
c Asgr\1ega1\bknrcmt.wpd
