Dissolved solids concentrations at this station averaged
at 415 mg/1 and sulfates at 100 mg/1 - Suspended solids were
high for three samples of six, but on May 1 , 1979 1560 mg/1
were recovered. Heavy metals were not much of a problem,
although copper and iron had a couple high recoveries. The
degraded condition of Dutch Creek was similar to that of
Bear Creek (Station BC-1 , Table 30) , the next sampling station.
Runoff laden with coal dust from the plant grounds is treated in
a series of settling ponds and discharged to Bear Creek. Again,
dissolved solids in the creek were high averaging 315 mg/l ,
suspended solids averaged 100 mg/l , and sulfate averaged 120 mg/l .
Iron was a greater problem averaging 2550 ug/l .
The last point of sampling was Coal Creek above the confluence
with the Crystal (Station CC-I , Table 25) , about three miles below
Bear Creek. The condition of Coal Creek was still heavily degraded.
Copper and iron were still excessively high averaging 6 Vg/1 and
1345 ug/1 respectively. The average dissolved solids concentration
of 317 mg/1 was about the same as at the intermediate Coal Creek
Station CC-2. Average suspended solids averaged Ill mg/1 similar
to Station CC-3, while the average sulfate concentration was 100 mg/l .
Table 6 graphically represents the average solids and sulfate
concentrations of Coal Creek and better illustrates the fluctuations
of these parameters.
i 7
The sulfate concentrations in this drainage can be assoc ated I
with the coal mining activities, since sulphur is a small percentage I
of coal . The total dissolved solids concentrations which include
21 -
