feet in height. In order to be safe, this work must proceed very
cautiously. Some loose material is available from the bench area
itself, however, large portions of the bench area are in competent
rock.
It is not logical to blast down more material from above the
highwall since the slopes continue upward at extremely steep
angles. A large area would have to be disturbed to obtain
additional fill.
The fill material from the upper edge of the spoil slope, plus
loose material available on the bench itself, plus blasted concrete
foundations, plus topsoil from nearby borrow areas results in the
amount of "reasonably available material" for backfilling. There
are no other areas within a reasonable distance where fill material
can be obtained. The maps titled "Mine #3 Reclaimed ", etc. show the
total volume of reasonably available material as the fill volume
printed on the map. The cut volume shows what material can be
excavated from the bench and from the top of the downspoiled slope.
Each set of portal maps also corresponds to a cross - section which
shows the original terrain, the highwall and the proposed
backfilled slope, utilizing all available spoil.
It must be pointed out that the volumes shown on these maps are
intelligent estimates taking into account all knowledge of the
sites at this time. When the work is undertaken, the amount of
reasonably available material may be slightly higher or lower than
the estimates shown on the maps.
