the closed storage bin and is equipped with a tripper which
automatically traverses back and forth distributing the coal
uniformly in the bin. The conveyor spans the entire length
of the bin. The tripper can be set by the use of limit
switches to unload the coal over the whole bin or any selected
portion of it .
The loadout storage bin in horizontal cross-section is
600 feet long by 80 feet wide . It holds 28 , 000 tons of coal
when full . The sides , or hopper portion of the bin are
shaped in the form of a trough set at a 45 degree angle . At
the bottom of the trough is a loadout tunnel in which is
installed a convevor belt . Coal is fed from the bin onto
the conveyor belt by a rotary plow feeder which plows the
coal from shelves mounted on the sides of the tunnel . This
setup is the key to the successful operation of the bin .
Limit switches are installed to allow the plow to unload the
whole bin at once or various parts of it . The traverse
speed of the plow is variable and it is designed to uni-
formly load the belt . The speed of the two rotor blades on
the plow is variable and can be adjusted to control the
amount of coal placed on the belt . The rotors revolve in
opposite directions .
The belt in the loadout tunnel transfers its load at a
right angle onto another conveyor belt that discharges into
a surge hopper located over the railroad tracks . The surge
hopper is equipped with a hydraulic gate which can be moved
3
