The #5 mine area and country adjacent or south of Coal Creek (origi-
nally called Muddy Creek) and the old railroad grade up to the early-
1900's mine that was not reopened until 1974 was of course not included
in the 1969 inventory abstract. Consequently, this report will include
the original mine area, even though it is isolated, based on the assump-
tion that the logical base area site for a ski area development is
located at the preparation plant and waste area site at the mouth of
Dutch Creek.
In summary, the "study area", in spite of some marginal and unuse-
able portions, generally includes all of the south-southwestern portions
of the Coal Creek drainage since it is affected by the mining operations
and related support facilities. Another factor is the 160 acre tract of
private land in Section 4 that is also owned by Mid-Continent. This
overall area - plus three potential expansion possibilities (Hayes Creek
Basin, Lee Creek Basin and the McClure Pass Slope) - is delineated on
the 1" = 2000' scale USGS topographic map section in the Appendix.
Approximate acreage figures, including both private and National Forest
land (also shown on the above map) , are as follows:
A - Area south of Coal Creek to the Huntsman Ridge 9,490 acres
B - Haves Creek Basin 600 acres
C - Lee Creek Basin 850 acres
D - McClure Pass slope 870 acres
Total 11,810 acres
The potential lift-served skiing acreages in the above segments -
all of which are of course subject to much more detailed terrain analysis
regarding lift and trail locations, avalanche hazards, etc. - are estimated
to cover approximately 3,200 acres or about one-third of "A", and all of
"B", "C" and "D" for a total of 5,500 acres.
-7-
