BUILDINGS: Bath house and office - 85' X 175'
M-K truck garage - 100' X 130'
Ambulance garage - 25' X 75'
OTHER: Washing plant, coal storage bins, electric power substation,
water and sewage systems, conveyor system for waste area.
PLANT AND WASTE AREA: Approximately 8 acres
DISTURBED LAND AREA: Approximately 350 acres
From 1977 S.C.S. survey. Includes road surfaces, road cuts and fills,
plant and waste areas, mine portal and work areas.
During the late 1950's and early 1960's in anticipation of increased
public demand for ski areas, I quietly started an extensive field review
of the potential sites from Vail Pass to Aspen and Meeker. During that
period I also prepared the feasibility survey reports and eventually the
development permits for Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk Mountain, Vail, Snow-
mass and Sunlight. I also recommended, based on 1954 studies while still
District Ranger at Dillon, the Copper Mountain site for the alpine skiing
events for Denver's ill-fated 1976 Winter Olympics bid while serving as
head of the alpine events site selection team for the Denver Organizing
Committee.
The rate of growth for recreational or lift-served downhill skiing -
as well as cross country skiing - shows no sign of decline and adjacent
competition appears to improve the market rather than affect it adversely.
For example: the Summit County complex of four areas (Arapahoe Basin,
Keystone, Breckenridge and Copper Mountain; the I-70 or "Vail Corridor"
consisting of Copper, Vail and Beaver Creek (1980-81) ; and the Aspen or
"Highway 82 Corridor" consisting of Sunlight, Snowmass, Buttermilk,
Aspen Highlands and Aspen Mountain.
