The following comparison in relation to the "Hump" slopes may be of <br /> value. A lift, utilizing the #3 and #5 mine roads for construction, on <br /> the northeast side would open up much more variety but with character- <br /> istics similar to the lift-served "Palivacinni" avalanche path at <br /> Arapahoe Basin that has a vertical drop of only 1,400' on a 50 percent <br /> (27 degrees) average slope distance of 3,400' and with the steepest <br /> pitches exceeding 70 percent. However, the "Hump" also has options for <br /> additional intermediate runs via the terrain on the northwest side and <br /> around and into the base near Coal Creek. Perhaps a more suitable <br /> comparison since it can be seen from south Glenwood, especially in <br /> reference to the expert terrain at the head of Spring Creek, is the <br /> small but uniform "bowl" just west or across the Roaring Fork River from <br /> Berthod Motors. The average grade here is about 50 percent (27 degrees) <br /> with the upper steep pitches in the 75 percent (35 degrees) range. <br /> The obvious over-emphasis about the "Hump" is in turn related to <br /> the cross country skiing possibilities in the same general area. A lift <br /> or two to serve this terrain might be economically justified for a <br /> future expansion segment if it became readily accessible through an <br /> extension of the main road for a distance of approximately two miles <br /> from the plant area to the 160 acre tract of Mid-Continent's land in <br /> Section 4; specifically to the old cabins at the junction of Coal and <br /> Porcupine Creeks. According to Forest Service records a road right-of- <br /> way was reserved (in the original patent of 7/22/20) through the lower <br /> or Sutey 90 acre tract in Section 10. <br /> The 160 acres in Section 4 is not only well suited for residential <br /> use but it would also be an excellent location for a cross country <br /> skiing center or base where the power line to mine #5 passes over the <br /> old cabins.
