Table VI-H-1
Post-Mine Reclamation Schedule
Mining is expected to continue until after 2020.
On final cessation of mining, the following schedule for reclamation will be followed.
Prior to this time, the operater will seek any necessary permission for alternative use
requirements which may be necessary to implement postmining plans, which call for
development of the winter recreational potential of the area.
FINAL RECLAMATION:
Due to the severe winter conditions in Coal Basin a full working season is only about six
months long (May - October). It will probably require two or more seasons to complete
the reclamation work following mine closure. The planned schedule will be:
— First season (Summer 6 months). Reclaim Nos. 1,
3, 4 and 5 portal areas
— Second season (Summer 6 months). Reclaim tunnel
and preparation plant areas, all roads not associated
with postmining land uses and the Carbondale train
loadout
— Third season (Summer 6 months). Additional work, as
necessary
The major steps are:
Removal of Structures
Sealing of Portals
Backfilling and Grading
Topsoil Replacement
Revegetation
POSTMINING USE
Cross-country and snowcat-served skiing could begin after active mining ceases, and
would constitute an additional wintertime usage, complimentary to the wildlife and
grazing uses of the non-snow seasons.
Downhill lift-served skiing would require more planning, permission from the U.S.F.S.,
and construction activity, and would take place over a longer time period.
37
