Mid-Continent ' s experience in Coal Basin leads us
to conclude that snow for winter sports will be plentiful
and reliable . Snowfall begins in late October and continues
through May .
Mid-Continent has recorded snowfall at Coal Basin
since 1970 , from November through May : (Table VI-D-1) .
The National Weather Service records made during
1978-1979 at the current preparation plant area , future site
of the base facility , indicate that temperature conditions
are sufficiently cool to maintain good snow conditions . The
weather station site also experienced substantial snowfall .
(Tables VI-D-2 & 3)
Altitude factors are similarlv favorable for
reliable snow conditions . The sites to be developed in the
area , based on the Hauk study, are north-facing (generally
speaking) and exceed the 8 , 000 ' minimum for adequate snow
cover . (Table VI-D-4)
Final decisions as to lifts and ski slopes will be
preceded by further , detailed analysis of terrain and relevant
environmental factors such as snow depths and characteristics .
Current plans , based on the Hauk study, include primarily
the "A" area south of Coal Creek to the Huntsman Ridge--an
area of approximately 9 , 490 acres .
-14-
